Islington Bay, Rangitoto

Scream made a pair of two-night stops in Islington Bay, on the south side of the causeway between Rangitoto and Motutapu islands. Islington is a large bay with room for a hundred or more boats to anchor in 20 feet, sticky mud bottom. It is sheltered from all directions except the south, thought the wake from the frequent ferry service does roll in several times an hour. Islington is quite popular and we recommend it, particularly to await a favourable tide before entering Auckland.

Rangitoto is an inactive volcano. We walked an hour along the lava rock roads to the top where there are great views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.

the 40 m afternoon aurora ham net works like a charm for Western Canada, and Vancouver Island usually comes in very nicely so I am looking forward to ham qso's when you get back.

    Bon Voyage
