Santa Catalina Island
Scream arrived on Catalina after an unpleasant trip from Santa Barbara (city). To our joy, we entered the calm and shallow Emerald Bay. Utterly confused by the semi-private mooring system (more below) we anchored in the south entrance of the bay. Emerald Bay has clear green water and a sandy bottom. We saw our anchor […]
Santa Cruz Island
Scream consulted a few sources before deciding on visiting Smuggler's Cove on Santa Cruz Island. All of our sources agreed that Smuggler's Cove was the best place to anchor in NW weather. We had a forecast for 10-15 in the Santa Barbara Channel. Predictably, we had no wind most of the way across so we […]
The best falafel (AKA Santa Barbara)
Scream pulled into Santa Barbara Friday morning after a motor/sail from Port San Luis. We sailed to point conception, which some people think of as a dangerous location. There we encountered force 1 to 2 winds in flat seas when the forecast was for force 5, so we motored the remaining distance to here. Talking […]
San Luis Obispo
We sailed from Morro Bay to Port San Luis on Tuesday. It was a short sail, in brilliant blue water with sunny skies overhead. We pulled into the anchorage after checking with the Harbor Patrol about the correct place to stop. It has been piping up a little while we've been here, as we've been […]
Morro Bay
After buddy boating from Monterey with Demelza, we arrived in Morro Bay on Wednesday. We has planned to anchor in San Simeon, but southerly winds were predicted, and none of us wanted to end up in a bad anchorage so we pushed on. We after crossing the bar in small seas but strong current, we […]
Santa Cruz and Monterey
We spent a couple of days in each of Santa Cruz and Monterey on Monterey Bay. We were good tourists, and spent an afternoon at the beachfront amusement part in Santa Cruz, riding rollercoasters and playing arcade games. It was more fun than I would have thought, and a good antidote to boat, boat, boat. […]
Halfmoon Bay
Scream sailed (yes, sailed) out of San Francisco bay and south to Half Moon Bay. We didn't go ashore, but I can say that the Bay has a large, well-sheltered area inside the breakwater where we anchored in 15 feet. We spent our first night at anchor in calm water since Crescent City.
San Francisco
We're having a great time in San Francisco. After a month of small towns with few sailboats and fewer cruisers, San Francisco was a bit of a shock. There are dozens of boats out day sailing in the bay every day. We've also encountered several boats that we know from Canada, the first familiar faces […]
Waiting for Weather - Crescent City and Fort Bragg
As anticipated, we've had to wait in port for weather to clear up a few times so far. The longest of these have been in Crescent City and Fort Bragg. We waited out gales in both towns, and took the opportunity of a few shore days for some sightseeing. Crescent City is located at the […]
